Cheness Cutlery

Cheness specializes in making blades and nothing else. They have made and continuously practice making blades using traditional Japanese hand forging methods as well as modern steel treatment techniques. Over time Cheness has become experts at forging monosteel swords, wrapped core steel, sandwiched steel, folded steel, Damascus forge, and cicada forge.

Because of this, they don't necessarily build our own fittings and may share some of the fittings with other sword companies. But never confuse these blades with anyone else's. This is where Cheness excels over the rest.

These swords are NEVER stainless steel as many other sword makers use Stainless steel being too soft for our applications and dangerous in use. Always hand forging with 1045 to 1065 carbon steel and we always quench our swords in water or oil. They understand the function to the art and we selectively clay our hamon by hand for function and esthetics.

SGC Series
Cheness SGC (Specialized Goza Cutters) Series Swords

These specialized blades were built based upon a custom designed sword created expressly for dojo cutting exercises. After more than half a year in planning and preparation, they have finally completed our SGC series for production.

These swords are broader and thinner than a standard katana. With a weight distribution optimized for cutting exercises. The entry angle of the cutting edge is effectively minimized by the geometry and is only made feasible with the Cheness Spring Steel, which aids in maintaining the edge durability.

O Katanas
Cheness O-Katanas
O-Katana literally translates to Large Katana. The length of the O-katanas are generally longer than can be drawn from the scabbard from the waist without twisting the torsal and pulling back the scabbard. It has the mass to carry it through tough targets with ease and an extended reach relative to standard katanas.

Katana
Cheness Standard Line Swords

The following are our standard katana length sharpened blade swords. These are all high carbon sharpened blades. If you are looking for blunted models please refer to our Iaito section. These Swords all come with a free display box as well as a free sword bag.

Iaito
Cheness Iatio Swords

Cheness Iaitos are non-sharpened blades meant for iai and kendo kata practices. The steel blades are more durable than the standard aluminum alloy and heavier to feel. These swords more closely resemble the physics of a live steel katana with less dangers than a sharpened edge.

(Zinc/Aluminum Alloy iaito are made only due to restrictions on production of steel swords in Japan).

Ko Katana
Cheness Ko-Katanas
Ko-Katanas or known as Chisa Katanas are katanas that has been reduced in blade length for the ease of use in tight quarters. These swords still has a katana length handle and can be used as either single or double handed swords. They are faster to draw and lighter to maneuver. The more frequent applications of this blade in modern time are within karate dojos.

Wakizashi
Cheness Wakizashis
Like our katanas, our wakizashis are all constructed of high carbon steel and designed for functional cutting practices. The wakizashi is a great addition to any Cheness collection. These also come with a free display box as well as free sword bag.

Specialty
Cheness Specialty Section
Occassionally, Cheness receives requests from dojos or federations to produce rare and hard to find custom blades in bulk. They make them available to you here so that you may be able to find the same swords that would have cost thousands to custom build. If you or your dojo have a need for high number of custom blades, let us know, maybe we can help.

Shirasaya
Cheness Shirasaya
Shirasaya translates to "White Scabbard" literally. These are swords mounted in a plain wooden scabbard and handle. This type of mounting is typically for storage, transport, or display only. Occassionally, they are used as disguised weapons and had been made famous by Japanese gangs or Yakuzas in movies. Shirasayas are meant to allow the sword to breath through the scabbard, so it should never be painted or lacquered. We made ours available as a means to safely transport the bare blades.

Shobu Zukuri
Cheness Shobu Zukuri

Shobu Zukuri translates to "Iris (leaf) construction". They are so named because the tip of the sword resembles the shape of the iris leaf... (thin and slender). Technically, the Shobu Zukuri katanas has the shinogi (ridge on the sides of the sword) running the entire length of the sword, and has no yokote or kissaki. However, the more common varient is to have the shinogi end just before the tip of the sword by a few millimeters. Cheness has created both varients of the Shobu Zukuri katana so you can have your choice. The first (Ayame) has the shinogi running the full length of the blade to the very tip of the sword. The second (Kurome) is the more common varient with the shinogi ending just before the tip.
